There are plenty of those out there. What I'm looking for are videos of what it's actually like for new players to play the game.
Here's a scene I would like to see depicted:
The player successfully flanks an enemy, empties an entire clip into them at point blank, and now must reload. The enemy's shields are down and still have 3/4 of their armor left, so they turn around and kill the player with half of a clip of their weapon.
I would upload it myself if I had video capture capabilities on my PS3, but I unfortunately do not.
So maybe all of you vets out there who can record video should start a new character (you know, one with less than 1,000,000 lifetime SP), join a pub match, and start recording how well you do.
There's one major problem, with this, though... What if you're so good that despite the lack of good gear and skills, you don't run into these problems? What if, in fact, your success was all due to your elite tactics and quick wit and had nothing to do with your gear and skills? Well, that's just a risk we're going to have to take.
Anyway, let's see the videos, vets.
How about the new player who comes around the corner, throws a grenade at his own feet, outlines the enemy and misses every single shot with a full clip, and bunny hops right in front of a tank.
THAT is serious business. |

I would like to point out that I got about five or six good games in. Militia gear, didn't know the maps, etc, etc. My KD might suck, but I knew where it was going ... up. Never once did I get just outright raped. More than most of my deaths were my own stupidity ... crossing open ground, not moving with my team, or bunny hopping in front of enemy tanks (that was me, yep).
Like every FPS, there is a learning curve. Weapons help, but weapons and gear can only help so much. I do worry, though, that Dust won't have any kind of skill system to match players to others of their abilities.
Nobody likes to be told that they just outright suck and that no matter how much crap they have, they will continue to suck. Or worse, are mediocre. But truth be told, most players do. FPS games have so much actual skill involved, what with reaction times and coordination and the like, that it really is a bad business if you can't do it.
Without a skill ranking, matches will be VERY lopsided on many occasions. |

Did we squad? :) I'm starting to think the initial poor reaction to this game isn't learning curve, it is paradigm shift. This isn't CoD or BF3, it is WOW with guns. No gunfight is going to be "fair". There are going to be a ton of twinks running around with uber gear. MMO players are used to getting slaughtered by twinks, FPS peeps are not. This is a whole new deal. I think a skill balance would help PUG games.
I love FPS games myself, specifically on console. BF3 and Halo are my two favorites, but I've been shooting up since the original Unreal Tournament and Tribes. The learning curve in every game can be severe.
And you know, there are some FPS games I try that I just cannot get good at, no matter what kind of no-scopes and killing spree's I can maintain in others. As I have played my friends (and owned them) and played legit tournaments (and been royally owned ... talk about pride being hurt), it's just one of those things to me.
But I don't think there is a hidden skill marker behind the scenes to try and balance fights. Because a crappy player with a ton of gear is still a crappy player and can be beaten by other crappy players. A great player with no gear will beat a crappy player with a ton of gear any day.
But the days you run into a great player with great gear? Your **** out of luck. |
